Canastota, NY – The bell has rung and the doors are open. The International Boxing Hall of Fame welcomes fans back for the first time since March 17.

“In boxing there’s a one minute rest. This one was 3 1/2 months so we’ve rearranged everything to follow the new guidelines,” said Edward Brophy, Executive Director of the Boxing Hall of Fame.

Masks are required for staff and fans, and social distancing reminders are posted. Hand sanitizer is available for all visitors and plexi glass shields are at every admissions desk. The Hall’s two buildings can be filled up to 25% capacity. Along with new guidelines there is also a new exhibit.

“We also have on display is the new exhibit a large screen TV sitting in the center of the most famous ring on display from Madison Square Garden. The ring that Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier fought each other in nearly 50 years ago,” said Brophy.

Tickets are available for purchase at a discounted cost.

“We’re even doing it at a special rate, a youth rate, all of July and August. So we’re throwing the biggest punch we can by giving everybody the youth rate to be a youth again at $8.50. There’s no adult no senior rate, everybody gets in at the youth rate,” said Brophy.

The boxing Hall of Fame class of 2020 would have been inducted here this month. Next year the class of 2020 and 2021 will be inducted together as the biggest induction class in its history.

“When we made that announcement in late March it was reasonable thing to do. The exciting part of all of this is that the 2020 class are excited about being honored next year with the class of 2021.

Brophy says that this reopening is great for Central New York.

“Just like in Cooperstown or in Canastota, it’s all in our backyard for Central New York. So it really provides everybody with a feeling of sports to visit the Baseball Hall of Fame and the Boxing Hall of Fame.”

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum reopened on Friday.

The Boxing Hall will be closed on Fourth of July weekend and will reopen 7 days a week with its normal hours.
