KINGAROY is set to host the fourth ever Annual International Sports Australia Championships.

The South Burnett Karate Association president and event coordinator, Geoff French, said they are expecting over 140 competitors for the championship competition on Sunday, August 11.

This will make it the biggest Kingaroy Karate event to date.

Competitors aged from 4 and over in all different disciplines and experiences are competing on the day.

The event is a grass roots event offering the competitors the opportunity to compete in local, state, national, and international events. This will also include pathways into professional competition circuits.

Mr French said the feature of the event will be the two UFC veterans, Brian Ebersole and Ben Ngeyen, who will make an appearance.

“Both UFC Fighters have heard of the SBKA Kingaroy competition and firmly believe that grass roots events like the Kingaroy competition will help develop and strengthen the sport,” he said.

“The UFC Fighters are wanting to meet the public, give autographs and have their photos taken with them.”

Mr French said he was excited to once again promote an event which helps support tourism and related industry to the area.

“It’s with the support from the community and South Burnett Regional Council that has helped the association grow into what it is today,” he said.

“Such high quality athletes in the South Burnett are rare and I invite the community to come to the event and see some spectacular martial arts action on the day.”

Mr French said another exciting feature is competitors are evenly matched in ration of male and female competitor registrations.

“For the first time ever we are seeing a 50/50 male to female competitor entry meaning females are stepping up and making a primarily male dominated sport a sport for all,” he said.

“Reasons for this has been local girl’s in sport promotions right up to the female domination of martial arts events with competitors such as Rhonda Rousey in WWE and UFC events.”

Doors open at 8am with the competition beginning at 9am at the Kingaroy State High School, Markwell St, Kingaroy.
