The new dorm that Massachusetts Maritime Academy plans at the former Gen. Charles Taylor estate on Taylors Point just off the canalside Buzzards Bay campus will house 72 honors cadets.
The Beachmoor Inn and Restaurant, formerly The Dolphin Inn, will be razed and the three-story dormitory in its place will include 36 double rooms, student amenities, multipurpose rooms and a catering set-up among other features.
The schematics and detailed plans for construction were delivered recently to the Taylors Point Improvement Association, which has designated three liaisons to MMA’s dorm planning efforts.
MMA Admiral Francis McDonald says the shingled dorm, with views of the approach to Buttermilk Bay, is the academy’s response to current enrollment levels. The facility will be built off Buttermilk Way but facing Tower Lane.
MMA plans to secure project permits this winter and spring. Construction is scheduled to start in the late spring and conclude during the summer of 2021.
The dorm is a hybrid of sorts and represents a marked departure from the barracks-like facilities nearby. The design has been softened to a large extent following Taylors Point concerns about its original imposing features on the edge of a residential neighborhood.
