LAURENS – Sumter High School wrestlers Davin Jackson and Jacob McDonald qualified for the 5A individual state tournament with their performances in the Upper State championships on Friday and Saturday at the Laurens High School gymnasium.
Jackson finished second in the 220-pound weight class, while McDonald finished fourth in the 106 class. Both entered the Upper State competition as No. 2 seeds.
Jackson won a 10-2 decision over Hillcrest’s DJ Wright, the No. 16 seed, in his first match. He followed it up by pinning both No. 11 seed Kole Lawson of Laurens and No. 3 Graysen Latham of Clover in the next two matches.
Jackson lost to No. 1 seed Jake Fernicola of Woodmont 6-0 in the championship match.
McDonald pinned No. 18 Mason Myers of Woodmont in his opening match. He followed with a 6-4 decision over (4) Mcquire Harms of Fort Mill.
McDonald lost by a 10-4 decision to No. 7 Cotton Smith of Rock Hill in his next match before winning an 8-6 decision No. 6 Hagen Moon of Westside that qualified McDonald for the state tournament.
McDonald lost to No. 3 Ayden Wheeler of Boiling Springs in the third-place match.
Jackson and McDonald will compete in the 5A individual state tournament on Friday and Saturday at Anderson Civic Center.
